Uniblinds Guide: How to Measure a Flyscreen

This is how to measure existing or new flyscreens.

1. Existing Flyscreens

If you already have well-fitting flyscreens, use them as a reference and avoid taking measurements from the centre in case the screen is bowed.

  • Screen Width:
    • Measure from the outer edge of the frame at both the top and bottom.
    • Record the smallest measurement.
    • Ensure no more than a 3 mm variation. If the difference is larger, contact us.
  • Screen Height:
    • Measure the height on both the left and right sides.
    • Record the smallest measurement.
  • Frame Width:
    • Use a solid ruler to measure the width of your window frame.
    • If less than 11 mm, face fitting the screen is recommended.

2: New Flyscreens

Face Fixed Measurements:

  • Screen Width:
    • Measure the recess at both the top and bottom.
    • Record the smallest measurement.
  • Screen Height:
    • Measure the height on both the left and right sides.
    • Record the smallest measurement.

Recess Fixed Measurements:

  • Width:
    • Measure from the lip of the shortest side (Point A) to the inside depth of Point B.
    • Subtract 2 mm for fitting clearance.
  • Height:
    • Measure from Point A (top of the recess) to Point B (lip of the bottom recess).
    • Subtract 2 mm for fitting clearance.

The bottom height recess will often have a shallower depth than the top.

  • Recess Width:
    • Use a solid ruler to measure the width of your recess.
    • Select either the 9 mm or 11 mm frame option during measuring.

Additional Information from Your Installer

Recess Fix:

The recess fix option means the flyscreen fits snugly into the window extrusion recess. This is the channel or groove within the window frame where the screen will sit. We offer two frame thicknesses for this method:

  • 11 mm frames: This is the most common thickness used, providing a sturdy fit for most standard windows.
  • 9 mm frames: A slightly thinner option for windows with narrower recesses.

Face Fixed:

The face fixed method involves attaching the flyscreen to the outer face of the timber or aluminium window sill. This method is ideal if your window frame does not have an adequate recess or if you prefer this installation style for aesthetic or practical reasons. For this method, we typically use:

  • 11 mm PVC turnbuckles: These are small, rotating fasteners that secure the flyscreen in place. They are available as an add-on when you purchase your screen.

Plunger Pins:

Plunger pins can be added to your flyscreen for extra security. These pins are spring-loaded and help keep the screen firmly in place. They can be purchased as an add-on during Step 3 of the Product Builder and will be installed during the manufacturing process.
